Snes9x - native 64bit support but compiled in 32bit mode

I would like to compile snes9x as a native 64bit application under AMD64, but the ebuild currently prevents this. I tried with -multilib, but it's not allowed, which I guess means it has to be enabled/disabled globally. I managed to compile by removing all of the multilib related aspects of the ebuild which works fine. So my question is as follows: Is there some issue with the 64bit version that the 32bit version does not have? Or is the 32bit compile just an artifact of older versions of snes9x that did not support native 64bit?
